Steve McDermott
is the original founder of CCFTC.
He was employed by the Hillsborough County
Sheriff’s office for over 27 years. While
working as a Deputy Sheriff, he responded to
a call for assistance where he met a
quadriplegic who was in need of a computer,
and did not have money to buy a “special
needs” machine. Steve, on his own
initiative, raised the money from fellow law
enforcement officers and purchased a new,
state of the art, computer that was
accessible by a quad. After this successful
conclusion, he decided that he would start a
charity to do this on a larger scale.
Besides people with disabilities, he decided
to include children, and other needy people
to those he would try and help.
As time went by, Cops and Computers for the
Community Inc., was formed by him, other
deputies, and concerned and compassionate
citizens. They continued to give away
computers. The IRS recognized our group as a
legitimate charity, and granted us 501 c 3
status. As of now, computer systems
have been donated to needy people from all
walks of life by the caring members of CCFTC
Inc.
Unfortunately, Steve suffered a spinal
injury during his duty as a law enforcement
officer, and had to step down as the guiding
force behind CCFTC Inc. Today he still
provides input to the current leadership,
and continues to watch this organization
grow into what will one
day be a very viable national
charity.
